Bogotá
Bogotá is Colombia’s high-altitude capital. La Candelaria, its cobblestoned center, features colonial-era landmarks like the neoclassical Teatro Colón and the 17th-century Iglesia de San Francisco. It's also home to the Museo Botero, showcasing Fernando Botero's art, and the Museo del Oro, displaying pre-Columbian gold pieces.
STAY
FOUR SEASONS CASA MEDINA BOGOTÁ Much of Colombian architect Santiago Medina Mejia’s original building details—stone columns, slanted beam ceilings, hand-carved doors rescued from convents remain. The courtyard, newly covered in glass, connects the original mansion with the neighboring annex and is now the setting for Spanish restaurant Castanyoles offering Iberian ham croquettes, salmorejo soup, and Bilbaína-style grilled fish. After a long day of sightseeing, we recommend the Colombian green coffee wrap at the Spa.
FOUR SEASONS BOGOTÁ A contemporary choice in the Zona Rosa area— steps away from the city’s best shopping, nightlife, and cafés.
CLICK CLACK An eccentric11-floor boutique hotel with a cantilevered exterior wrapped in mesh (look closely and it is actually a street map of the city). The property also features a rooftop burger bar and ground-floor farm-to-table restaurant. There is also a location in Medellín.
THE ORCHIDS In the heart of Candelaria, this boutique hotel in a townhouse is part art gallery, complete with pre-Columbian ceramics, restored 19th-century woodwork, vintage rugs, and shelves of leather-bound books. Each of the six suites, named after an opera, feature a fireplace, a freestanding tub, and writing desks. Book a treatment in the traditional-tiled hammam.
B.O.G. HOTEL In, Cabrera, the glass-and-concrete façade of this hotel gives way to stylish interiors with gold and emerald hues (a nod to Colombia’s precious minerals) and textured cowhide chairs and wood floors courtesy of Portuguese designer Nini Andrade Silva. A restaurant by Chef Leonor Espinosa offers seasonal Colombian cuisine, and there is also a rooftop pool and subterranean spa at the property.
HOTEL DE LA OPERA Bogota’s stately grand dame occupying a pair of colonial homes in La Candelaria. Live music shows are offered on the weekends, and the property offers a spa and two restaurants— La Scala for Mediterranean or El Mirador for regional specialties and cathedral views from the rooftop.
CASA LĖLYTĖ Nestled within the hills of Chapinero Alto, the so-called Williamsburg of Bogotá, is a charming bed-and-breakfast. Featuring a lobby cocktail bar with midcentury modern furnishings and a tangerine-tiled dining room where chef and owner María Angélica Bernal prepares vegetarian cuisine. Up the wrought-iron spiral staircase, works by local artists line the walls.

CERRO DE MONSERRATE Monserrate has been considered an important sacred place since before the arrival of the Spanish: the local Muisca indigenous people called the mountain quijicha caca or ‘grandmother’s foot’, and considered it important to their religious traditions, due to the fact that the sun rises directly behind the mountain during the solstice in June. During the colonial period, the Brotherhood of Vera Cruz built the religious retreat at the top of the mountain, which they named after the Morena Virgin of Montserrat near Barcelona in Catalonia. Today, you can visit the shrine of El Señor Caído by knee (as the pilgrims do) or via funicular (our choice) for unparalleled views of the city.
