Jesse Marlo Laz | Nantucket

Jesse Marlo Lazowski

“I come here to collect my thoughts and transform my inspiration into jewelry designs.”

In September 2018, we took a trip to Nantucket with Jewelry Designer, Jesse Lazowski. Her eponymous label, Marlo Laz Fine Jewelry, is made in NYC with precious gemstones sourced from her travels around the world. In fact, during a trip to Jaipur, India in 2014, she began working with a team of artisans, designing, and overseeing the production of what would become her first jewelry collection. After years of traveling and living abroad, she returned to New York City to attend the Gemology Institute of America, and she opened her first boutique on Bleecker Street in 2020. “It’s an Italian palazzo meets a Moroccan riad meets an Indian haveli,” Lazowski said of her store’s interior style. Standout pieces include a 1970s Barovier & Toso Murano glass amber chandelier and a gilded mosaic mirror from Syria, testaments to the inspiration sourced from every corner of the globe. Recent collections have featured Squash Blossoms inspired by the American Southwest, Art Nouveau letters mirroring those seen across Budapest, and Greco Evil Eye talismans to bring good luck.

One place Jesse returns to year after year is Nantucket, where her family has spent nearly every summer. “I come here to collect my thoughts and transform my inspiration into jewelry designs.” She shares some of her favorite island destinations below:

STAY

GREYDON HOUSE
Sip and sleep at this new go-to spot downtown. Designed by Roman and Williams, the chic and moody interiors keep one cozy rain or shine—cocktails can be enjoyed inside by the fireplace or outside on the patio. Have a ginger margarita on the rocks and enjoy the view!

CLIFFSIDE BEACH CLUB HOTEL
I’ve never met a sunset I didn’t like, and Nantucket has some of the world's best. There is no better place to watch them on the island than beachside at the Galley. It’s reminiscent of my childhood—I’ve been going since 1990.

DINE | DRINK

ROAST GENERAL STORE
Rise and shine or should I say wake and bake? Roastd is the best café to get an iced coffee (with a side of CBD should you feel inclined)!

SOMETHING NATURAL It’s always a lovely day at Something Natural. They make their own delicious Portuguese bread to complete the perfect sandwich for a lunch by the sea.

WICKED ISLAND BAKERY
The morning buns at Wicked Island Bakery are absolutely worth waking up at the crack of dawn for. They are served fresh and warm from the oven and often sell out well before 9 a.m. This year on my birthday, I woke up to a surprise from my best friends—a cake made of morning buns for breakfast. It was certainly a sweet and wicked way to kick off the new year.

THE JUICE BAR
It wouldn’t be a trip to Nantucket without a visit to the infamous Juice Bar. In the evenings, the line outside TJB wraps around the block, giving Soho Supreme a run for their money. My flavor of choice is blackberry with a homemade waffle cone. I mean, you only live once, right?

THE CHANTICLEER RESTAURANT & GARDENS
Every Friday night you can find me at Chanticleer for my standing reservation. Susan, the visionary behind Chanticleer and the breakfast spot Black-Eyed Susan’s is an archeologist turned restaurateur with endless entertaining tales to tell. Order the burger and you won't be disappointed.

167 RAW 167 Raw is not your average food truck. Not only do they have the best guacamole outside of Mexico, but their lobster rolls and fish tacos are incredible. Order all three!

BAR SALTIE
Bring out your inner mermaid at Bar Saltie where beach waves are accepted, if not encouraged. I like to pop in for a post-beach refreshment.

ARTS | CULTURE | ACTIVITIES

SCONSET BLUFF WALK
Stop and smell the hydrangeas! Sconset Bluff Walk a.k.a. the Cliff Walk is a picturesque path that leads from Siasconset to Sankaty Head Lighthouse.

BARTLETT'S FARM
Young, Wild, and Free. This seventh-generation family-owned farm has fields upon fields of the most beautiful wildflowers. The vibrant arrangements often decorate our table at home. I like to keep it local and do our grocery shopping at the market, which has only the best organic and fresh produce.

NANTUCKET LIGHTSHIP BASKET MUSEUM
These basket bags are Nantucket's answer to the Birkin, with a museum to prove it. This charming museum focuses on the history and craftsmanship of the woven bags and features rotating exhibitions with beautiful examples. The fur-trimmed basket and special edition lapis lazuli accented basket currently on display are very ML and not to be missed!

SHOP

SERENELLA
This is the place to find Marlo Laz jewelry on Nantucket (they also have outposts in Palm Beach and Boston). The lovely owner, Leslee, has curated her boutiques to showcase everything from Missoni beach towels to Le Sirenuse's special edition scented candles, bringing the Amalfi to the Atlantic. ML is lucky to call it home on the island!

SPACE
Elise, the owner, is a former New Yorker who now calls Nantucket home. She has brought the world to the island through her boutique, Space, where one can discover ponchos from Peru, boots from Tokyo, tunics from Morocco, and the list goes on.

ATLANTIC Porcelain tea lights by Lilach Lotan and heart ornaments handmade by women in Oaxaca are just a few of the charming pieces you’ll find at this home and clothing spot.
