MT. HOOD   Gorgeous, snow-capped Mount Hood is visible from virtually anywhere in Portland, but it's totally worth the hour drive to see it up close. It is the perfect place for skiing, mountain biking, lake sports, or picnicking.

41 TRAIL   An urban Portland hike which combines a trail, a tram, a trolley, and a train in one loop with views of the city. Enter the 4T loop from the Oregon Zoo to Council Crest Park, then down to the campus of Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Get on Portland Aerial Tram. Next, step on the trolley (called Portland Streetcar) for a ride downtown. You can then take the train (MAX Light Rail) back to the start of the loop. The entire journey takes around four hours.

SAUVIE ISLAND Roughly the size of Manhattan, Sauvie Island is 20 miles outside of Portland, flanked by the Columbia River, Willamette River, and Multnomah Channel. sauvieisland.org

INTERNATIONAL ROSE TEST GARDEN The International Rose Test Garden has over 10,000 rose bushes of approximately 650 varieties. DAY WEEKEND TRIPS

PACIFIC CITY Located on Oregon’s coast, Pacific City is about a two-hour drive from downtown Portland. Pass through the sweet little town of Tillamook (home of the eponymous cheese brand). Head straight to the long, wide beach where you’ll find a huge sand dune and tide pools filled with sea urchins, barnacles, and other sea life. Order a flight of the award-winning beer at Pelican Pub & Brewery.

THE GORGE   The Columbia River Gorge is about twenty miles east of Portland, home to incredible waterfalls, hiking trails, and windsurfing. On your way here from Portland, stop at Crown Point, just off of the Historic Columbia River Highway to admire the panoramic view of the Columbia River.

CANNON BEACH A small coastal city known for its long, sandy shore. Standing tall in the ocean, Haystack Rock is a seasonal haven for tufted puffins. On a headland to the north, trails in Ecola State Park offer sweeping views of the ocean, coves and a lighthouse. South is Arcadia Beach, with tide pools and a picnic area. Nearby Hug Point has sea caves. Boutiques and galleries dot downtown, including Pelican Pub & Brewery.
